Kia Dashboard Light Meanings

With 29 Kia warning lights, it can be confusing to determine which of the Kia warning lights symbols indicate danger and which are totally harmless. Some Kia dash lights could simply indicate that your cruise control is active or your brights are on. Other lights like your Kia TPMS light indicate that you should stop at a Santa Clara gas station to pump up your tires, but don’t necessarily indicate an emergency.

Other lights, however, can indicate a serious issue. If you see a Kia warning light with an exclamation and triangle, this indicates that your Master Warning light was tripped. What does that mean? It indicates that your TPMS, washer fluid, or Blind Spot Detection systems are having issues. I could also mean that your fuel cap is open. Here are some other important lights to be aware of:

  • Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light: If your engine oil isn’t at the right pressure, you need to have your oil changed asap, as improper oil lubrication of your engine could result in overheating and catastrophic engine failure.
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light: Should this light come on, or you notice an extreme amount of effort is needed to make steering corrections, your power steering system has malfunctioned.
  • Malfunction (Engine Malfunction) Indicator Lamp: This is your Kia check engine light, and if it goes off, you should take your vehicle in for service ASAP.
  • TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Malfunction Indicator: This horseshoe type symbol with an exclamation mark in middle usually turns on when your tire pressure is low. However, if it flashes, this means that the system is malfunctioning and can’t gauge pressure accurately.
  • Airbag Warning Light: This symbol will simply say “AIRBAG.” It indicates that your airbag system is malfunctioning. For the sake of your safety, you’ll want to take your car in promptly.
  • ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) Warning Light: This light features the text, “ABS,” surrounded by a circle and parentheses. This indicates that your braking system needs to be examined. Since this is critical for your safety, you shouldn’t wait to take your vehicle in if this lights up.
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light: This flashes if your engine is overheating and stays lit in red. This could indicate that your model is about to experience massive vehicle failure, in which case, you need to pull over immediately and have your car towed to our garage.
